Course:
The subject of the course “Ukrainian as a Foreign Language” is the set of components (grammar, vocabulary, phonetics, stylistics) necessary for developing students’ professionally oriented communicative competence to ensure effective communication in academic, professional and sociocultural environments.
The aim of the course is to build a coherent system of students’ knowledge about the language, enrich international students’ vocabulary, develop oral and written, monologue and dialogue speech, and improve skills in all types of speech activity (reading, writing, listening and speaking) in academic and sociocultural communication.
Main objectives of the course. Upon completing the course students should demonstrate the following learning outcomes:
Linguistic knowledge:
- Phonetic: − the main phonetic and intonation norms of Ukrainian pronunciation at a level sufficient for solving communicative tasks in various spheres of communication; − all intonation patterns;
- Lexical: − special terminology and specific constructions of the academic style based on the subjects studied; − stylistic use of polysemous words, use of words in literal and figurative meanings; − use of synonyms, antonyms, homonyms and paronyms; − use of idiomatic expressions;
- Grammatical: 1) features of the functioning of parts of speech in texts of different styles; 2) typical word-formation patterns of nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbial participles, participles and adverbs; 3) expressing subject–predicate relations: − expressing the subject; − qualification and characterisation of the subject; − expressing the predicate; − transitive and intransitive actions; − subject–predicate agreement; − active and passive constructions; 4) expressing the manner of an action (verb aspect): − forming aspectual forms of the verb; − use of verb aspects in simple and complex sentences; − constructions with phasal verbs and the infinitive; − constructions with the imperative; − expressing obligation and possibility; 5) expressing object relations: − functions of the object in a sentence; − constructions with a direct object; − constructions with an indirect object; − complex sentences with object clauses; 6) expressing attributive relations: − constructions with agreed attributes; − constructions with non-agreed attributes; − active and passive participles, participial phrases; − complex sentences with attributive clauses; 7) expressing adverbial relations (place, time, manner, measure and degree): − spatial relations in simple and complex sentences; − temporal relations in simple and complex sentences; − adverbial participles and adverbial participial phrases; − expressing manner, measure and degree in simple and complex sentences; 8) expressing comparison and contrast (simple and complex sentences); 9) expressing adverbial relations (condition, concession, cause and effect, purpose) in simple and complex sentences; 10) expressing negation: − constructions with the negative particle “не” and the word “немає”; − constructions with negative pronouns and adverbs; 11) expressing modal relations: − desirability, probability, necessity; − means indicating objective and subjective evaluation of information; − means indicating how a fact or object is presented; − means establishing logical relations between statements; 12) parenthetical words and phrases: − modal evaluation (certainty, uncertainty, prediction, doubt, probability); − emotional evaluation (joy, sympathy, regret, caution); − indicating the source of information; − indicating the connection of ideas and the sequence of presentation; − evaluating the style of a statement and the way of expressing an idea; − attracting the interlocutor’s attention; 13) asyndetic sentences: − expressing simultaneity, sequence, comparison or contrast in asyndetic sentences close to compound sentences; − expressing object, attributive and adverbial relations in asyndetic sentences close to complex sentences; 14) expressing connection within a sentence and between sentences; 15) expressing connection between parts of a complex sentence; 16) defining connection between sentences (complex syntactic whole).
Sociocultural knowledge:
− the main rules of speech behaviour in typical communication situations in academic and professional, sociocultural, and official business spheres;
− linguo-cultural information, including professionally oriented information.
