Course “Ukrainian for Professional Purposes”

Short course description (general characteristics, features, advantages):

Course aims:

  • developing students’ communicative competence;
  • gaining communicative experience that develops students’ creative abilities, encourages self-fulfilment, stimulates cognitive interests and realises heuristic abilities as key factors in building the professional skills and competitiveness of a modern specialist;
  • developing optimal language behaviour in the professional sphere: influencing the interlocutor through skilful use of various language means, mastering the culture of monologue, dialogue and polylogue; understanding and reproducing professional texts, learning the vocabulary and terminology of one’s speciality, choosing communicatively appropriate language means, and using various types of dictionaries.

Teaching and educational methods and methodology:

  • analysis;
  • synthesis;
  • comparative analysis;
  • inductive and deductive methods;
  • verbal methods (explanation, conversation, lecture, debate);
  • visual methods;
  • practical teaching methods, including setting a task, planning its completion, ongoing motivation, regulation and control, analysing the results of practical work, identifying the causes of shortcomings and adjusting teaching to fully achieve the goal.

Course objectives

  • to form a clear and correct understanding of the role of the state language in professional activity;
  • to ensure perfect command of the norms of modern literary Ukrainian and compliance with the culture of oral and written speech;
  • to develop self-monitoring of compliance with language norms in communication;
  • to develop students’ creative thinking;
  • to foster respect for the Ukrainian literary language and language traditions;
  • to develop skills in using professional terminology, editing, correcting and translating academic texts.

Students should be able to:

  • thoroughly learn the norms of modern literary Ukrainian and master them in practice;
  • correctly use various language means according to communicative intentions; express thoughts precisely to successfully solve problems and tasks in professional activity;
  • understand, reproduce and edit texts in the official business and academic styles;
  • summarise and create professional academic texts, draw up plans, notes, abstracts, etc., and make the necessary notes and extracts according to the goal;
  • draw up various types of documents, correctly choosing the language means that reflect their specifics;
  • use lexicographic sources (dictionaries) and other reference literature necessary for independent improvement of language culture.
